This bulletin applies to 2018 Jeep Compass vehicles built on or after Aug. 25, 2017, and on or before Sept. 9, 2017. If a loss of power steering assist occurs, it may be due to water intrusion in the steering column wiring.

The MIL may be on accompanied by the following DTCs:

- C1593-49 (steering torque sensor circuit, internal electronic failure)

- C1592-01 (electronic power steering motor circuit – general electrical failure)

- C15DB-00 (EPS disabled)

- C2217-00 (electric power steering module internal)

- C2210-00 (ECU over temperature)

In addition, you may also experience high steering effort and a cluster screen message “Power Steering Deactivated, Repair System”.

Using a scan tool and TechCONNECT, verify all related systems are functioning as designed. If DTCs other than those listed here, record and repair as needed before proceeding.

Replace the steering column assembly. Note: it is necessary to replace the two nuts that hold up the steering column as well as installing a new steering wheel nut. It is also necessary to replace the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.

Perform a SRS Verification test. Refer to DealerCONNECT>TechCONNECT under Service info 10 – restraints/standard procedure.

Perform a Proxy Alignment. Follow the routine outlined in the diagnostic scan tool for PROXI Configuration Alignment under Body Control Module (BCM) Miscellaneous Functions menu.

Using the scan tool, under “Miscellaneous Functions” perform the Steering Angle Calibration procedure in the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) module.

Perform the Clear Steering Pull Compensation procedure. Refer to 29 – DTC-based Diagnostics/Module, Electronic Power Steering/Standard Procedure in the service info.
